By Jimmy L. Hill The winner of the contest from the last issue is Michele Malvern from Valdosta, GA. Congratulations Michele!! She will receive a one-year subscription to Southern Festivals. Thanks to all of you who sent in entries. The picture is of the Jekyll Island Club located at Jekyll Island, Georgia. The Jekyll Island Club Hotel, located on a barrier island of unusual natural beauty, is Victorian treasure. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1978, it has been designated a Historic Hotel of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Originally a hunting retreat for the nation’s wealthy elite, the hotel today is a unique resort with architectural character and a charming historic ambience. Charles Alexander of Chicago and Charles Alling Gifford of New York designed the main structures, built between 1887 and 1902. Alexander designed the original club house in the American Queen Anne style, incorporating into its plan the turret which dominates the roof line, extensive verandas, bay windows, extended chimneys and overall asymmetrical design. This issue’s contest of “WHERE AM I” is up for grabs. The contest will test your ability to remember where certain things are located in Georgia. Are you willing to give it a try? The contest works like this… each issue will have a picture of a landmark, famous location, statue, scene or another related item. Southern Festivals will draw one winner from all correct entries. The winner receives a one-year subscription to Southern Festivals newspaper.
The only way to win is to send in your entries now. You must have your entry postmarked no later than April 5, 2004. Please be as specific as you can possibly be in regards to the location.
