Family togetherness is what keeps the Hewell family strong. "We consider ourselves to be traditional potters who pass the craft down from one generation to the next without skipping a generation. Now that's dedication to keeping a way of life going. Seven generations and still going strong", says Chester Hewell, grandfather to the 7th generation. The Hewell's invite you to be a part of The Hewell Family "Turning & Burning™" Festival. The name of the festival comes from the fact that the focus is always on "turning" pottery by hand and "burning" it in the wood-burning kiln.
Witness corn meal grinding, chair caning, basket weaving, churning, quilting, broom making, woodcarving, tin punching and much, more. These finished products, along with lots of others, will be available for purchase. Also on display will be antique farm tractors, gas engines, mule drawn machinery and more. Take a break and go for a wagon or buggy ride. Live Gospel and Country Music will be heard throughout the day.
The kids will enjoy the animals along with the experience of making their own pottery on an old kick wheel and then after the pottery is fired in the kiln, come back to pick up their creations.
Take your pick of hamburgers, hotdogs, biscuits, fried pies, boiled peanuts and much more as the area churches prepare food again this year.
Take a break from the fast pace life and go back in time on October 2, 2004 and join in the fun at Hewell's Pottery. "Turning & Burning™" will be going on from Daylight until 4:00 p.m., with free parking and admission.
From Atlanta take I-85 north to I-985. Follow I-985 to Exit #22, Highway 29 and turn right. Turn left on Highway 323 and follow to the intersection with Highway 52. Turn right on Highway 52. Hewell's Pottery will be on the left before you get to Gillsville.
