LAYOVER TO CATCH MEDDLERS

By Jimmy L. Hill

“Where Am I?” Contest

Each issue of Southern Festivals will have our contest that we call "Where Am I?"  The contest will test your ability to remember where certain things are located in Georgia.  Are you willing to give it a try?  See the page on this site for instructions on how to enter the contest.  Congratulations to Steve Swartz of Helena, Georgia for correctly identifying the location of the November/ December "Where AM I".  Steve knew this statue was located at the intersection of Highway 341/23 and 441/280 in McRae, Georgia.  The location is known as Liberty Square and contains a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Miss Liberty, built by local talent, is 1/16th the size of the original statue in New York.  Steve receives a one-year subscription to Southern Festivals.

Marketing of Southern Festivals

We continued to add more communities and tourist stops to our designated distributions sites during November and December.  We have recently received approval to place Southern Festivals in all of the State Parks and Lodges operated by the Department of Natural Resources, State of Georgia.  These locations, located all over Georgia, will increase the distribution of Southern Festivals immensely.  Southern Festivals newspapers are now in all of the State of Georgia Welcome Centers and Visitors Centers.  These locations are in addition to the slightly under two hundred other locations such as local visitor centers, chambers of commerce, festival locations, tourist stops and local attractions all over the state.  Southern Festivals is published every two months and we reach tens of thousands of Georgians and out-of-state visitors each year.

We will continue in our efforts to get more Southern Festivals newspapers into the hands of festival goers.  The publisher and I attended festivals during the past two months and have had tremendous response to Southern Festivals. If you know of locations that would like to distribute the Southern Festivals newspaper, please contact us at 1-888-345-4455.
We will continue our efforts to promote festivals, events, locations and other family oriented activities in Georgia.  If you have some ideas in regard to this effort, please send them to me at Southern Festivals, 1217 Eagle Ridge Road, Dawsonville, GA  30534, e-mail me at jlhill@alltel.net or call me at 1-888-345-4455.  We appreciate all of our festival advertisers, vendors, allies and festival goers for their support of Southern Festivals.

Do You Know?

Do you know that Amicalola Falls State Park has the highest visitation of all of Georgia's State parks?  Last year, 1.3 million people visited the park.  Red Top Mountain has the second highest visitation with 1.2 million visitors.  Following those were Georgia Veterans Memorial with 1.069 million, High Falls with 1.051 million and Unicoi with 834,000.  Over fourteen million persons visited Georgia's 48 State Parks in 2002.

When you travel and attend festivals the net result is that you are helping to support your community and the state of Georgia.  Look on page one of this newspaper or go to our Website at www.georgia-festivals.com and find a festival that is of interest to you and your family.  Load up the family and have a great day exploring festivals and other events.  This can be a great way for your family to spend some quality time together.  So get out there and visit your favorite festival or event!

This column will continue to bring you interesting notes regarding festivals, fairs and other notable events in the peach state.  It will also cover other fascinating ideas, concepts and musings about life in general as well as well as ramblings about rural Georgia. We may discuss those matters of great interest to those who thirst for incredible and sometimes useless knowledge.
