Lumber City Farm Day Festival

LUMBER CITY, GA -- Lumber City is a town of great history and wonderful people that live there. It has one of the greatest natural resources around, the Ocmulgee and Little Ocmulgee Rivers, along with some of the Creeks that make up the Little River. With these two rivers, come some of the greatest history of Paddle Boats and River Rafting of Lumber, not to mention, the World Record Bass being caught some few miles outside of Lumber City at Montgomery Lake and oh…the stories that have been told of the Train stopping in Lumber City. Mayor J. Hugh Harris loves to share stories of Lumber City.

Well over 30 years ago, every Saturday, folks would get up early, get their chores completed around the house and that afternoon get dressed and go to town. Picnics and musical instruments were brought along and folks would gather on the sidewalks and street to play and sing. As the afternoon would continue more and more folks would arrive and gather around to join in the singing and playing with some good 'ole dancing to go along with it. There would be games for the children (and children at heart) such as greased pig.

It was a time of fellowship, fun and happiness. Over the years, as folks lives became busier, this gathering stopped. A little over ten years ago, some of the residents that remembered those days, felt that it was time to bring back those good 'ole days so the kids could make memories of their own with times of fellowship, food, fun and happiness. Along with this thought, it was decided that it would be a great way to promote Lumber City to people outside of the area.

The Lumber City Woman's Club took charge, got busy and now the Lumber City Farm Day Festival is celebrating its 10th festival that will be held September 9-11.

The Festival includes, parade, dog show, talent show, local entertainment, arts, crafts, food and amusement park. This year along with many other great items, Kris Kelly-Roberson with Echoes of Time will be setting up an American Indian setting which will include Indian Dress, Traditional Songs & Dances, Weapons, Fire Building, Tools, Baskets, Foodways, Story Telling and much more. Kris is an American Indian Culturalist from Blackshear, Georgia.

Saturday events begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until midnight with a parade, dog show, talent show, local entertainment throughout the day, arts, crafts, food and amusement park, ending with a Street Dance that will begin at 8:00 p.m.
